Summer is the time to experiment with fashion. With the increasingly warm weather comes a wave of bright colors, interesting patterns and daring silhouettes just waiting to be tested. Think of summer as the period to discover some wild new pieces to incorporate into your everyday wardrobe. New summer fashion is essentially the spice you add to your standard neutrals and go-to favorites.
Easy and relaxed is always in style, no matter what the industry says is the trend for the season.
Think of the standard fashion at music festivals across the country: hippie chic, bohemian, whatever you want to call it. This year, especially, we saw more than the basic tie-dye, tank tops and cutoff jean shorts. The tribal influence was everywhere. Ethnic print oversize T-shirts, feather earrings and headbands, fringe bags and bold patterned maxi dresses took over the scene. Drew Barrymore even donned face paint with her gypsy skirt and single-feather leather headband at Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tenn., in June.
The look clearly trickled off the spring 2011 runways, many of which were heavily infused with a tribal/ethnic sensibility. The Missoni collection epitomizes the trend, combining bright colors and patterns with loose, unstructured silhouettes to create a multitude of interesting designs. Gucci kicked it up a notch with metallic tassel belts, fringe clutches and woven neutrals to show the sophisticated side of the tribal influence.
